Spring. Every pool owner's favorite time of year! The days are getting longer and the warm weather will soon follow. But opening your pool requires more than just peeling back your pool cover. Spring pool maintenance is a necessary step in ensuring a clean and safe pool that you can enjoy throughout the summer season.

There are a number of steps that must be performed to prime your pool for the season including:

Checking your chemicals: Ensure your water treatment supplies haven't passed their expiration date. Replace those that have.
Pool Cover: After removing the cover from your pool, clean and ensure it is thoroughly dried before folding it for storage to prevent mildew.
Pool deck and accessories: Check your pool deck to ensure it's intact and safe for bare feet. Reinstall any accessories including diving boards, ladders and any other fittings.
Pool plumbing, equipment and electrical check: Check, clean and reassemble the pool pump, pool filter and other equipment. Remove the plugs from the plumbing and reinstall the return outlet fittings. Turn circuit breakers, switches and time-clock trippers to their on positions.
Refill and clean: Scrub the walls and bring the water level up to normal. Restart the circulation equipment.
Balance the water chemistry: Treat your pool water and test and follow the chemistry levels for a few days until they stabilize.

COVID-19 Notice From Swim World Pools

As the added restrictions due to COVID-19 are enforced, WE as a company in the swimming pool industry can make a difference, protect the public and allow YOU to continue to enjoy your swimming pool. Especially now, as more and more people are working from home and kids are not in school. The use of swimming pools is going to increase and can offer a safe outlet.

By assisting in maintaining properly sanitized swimming pools and bodies of water WE are considered essential to public health. The risk of pools not being properly maintained would increase the likelihood of mosquitoes and put swimmers in potentially unsafe bodies of water. Important to remember, the CDC has no evidence that COVID-19 can be transmitted through properly sanitized pool water.

CDC guidance states: “There is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools and hot tubs. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools and hot tubs should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.” www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/php/water.html

It’s important that pool owners limit the people in the pool & on the deck to less than 10. Proper regular and scheduled disinfection and sanitizing of common entry and exit points to the pool and pool area, mainly ladders, handrails, gates, latches, doorknob is necessary to limit the transmission of COVID-19. How to Prepare Your Pool to Keep Running Through Freezing Temps

Follow these 6 easy steps to protect your pool through the winter.

1. Make sure your offline chlorinator is bypassed. Remove the tubing from one end of the chlorinator and attach it to the other post nipple connected to the pipe. Empty out the water in the chlorinator that is remaining, by turning it upside down.

2. Make sure if you have a bypass on your heater that it is open and water is flowing through the bypass and heater.

3. Make sure if you have a waste line that has a ball valve on it that a plug is installed on the opening of this line inside the filter and the water is drained by opening the valve to release the water.

4. Any water features need to be protected. These can stay running, but with cold air the water can turn to ice and this can cause your water level in the pool to drop and potentially allow the skimmers to suck in air and cause the water to not be able to flow which can have potential freeze damage.

5. Any auto fill devices or additional pipes that have water in them that can’t move and have not been winterized will need to be drained, or at the very least covered and heat tape used to protect from freezing.

6. Lastly, make sure to remove any water from your garden hoses in case you need to add water to your pool. The water in the hoses can freeze and prevent you from using them until they are thawed.
